Swarm Installation

An experience is an event or occurrence that leaves an impression. It’s the apprehension of an object, thought, or emotion through the senses. Much of our experiences are attributed to sight. But what if we eliminate this sense. How would our experience change? Our other senses touch, sound etc. are heightened and our minds and imagination come into play with what is unknown. “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science…” – Albert Einstein.

Our art Installation is an experiential walk through that allows the audience to interact with different textures and sound. Our theme is inspired by the idea of a ‘swarm’ and navigating through its form. To create a similar setting for the blind and the sighted all audience members will be blindfolded. We want our audience to experience and interact with the elements in a swarm through touch, feel, sound and movement. By experiencing the gradual progression in the density of the components of the swarm, we intend to bring in the element of surprise. Once the audience gets familiar with the structure, every time they walk through it they can interact with the components in a new way.

Details of Installation:

The installation is to be set up in an enclosed public space / Art gallery. The dimensions of the installation are 10 feet (length) x 5 feet (width). The form comprises of a textured floor piece 8 x 4 feet that has varying densities of textures along with a swarm structure that is hanging above. As the audience navigates their way through the swarm, the intended movement of the components is random and scattered. An element of sound is introduced when the components of the swarm are disturbed. The age group we are aiming at is 12 +

Materials Used In Installation:

The structure of the installation is mainly fabric that is manipulated using different techniques. There is a combination of synthetic and natural fabrics used. The components of the swarm are hung from he ceiling at different levels with fish wire and string. Speakers are required for the sound element.
